Community Volunteering

Glasses (2)Community Volunteering

Prevent Blindness Wisconsin volunteer vision screeners are an essential part of our mission to prevent blindness and preserve sight. Our 15 volunteer groups are located in the greater Milwaukee area, Madison, and the Fox Valley. Volunteers vision screen primarily at local preschools and child care centers, although some also screen at elementary schools. All volunteers must attend a two hour vision screener training prior to volunteering.

Prevent Blindness Wisconsin Volunteering

2018-2019 Community Volunteer Contribution:

250 certified volunteers

15 volunteer groups across the state

8,507 children screened by volunteers

1,698 hours spent volunteering

Over 180 preschools, child care centers, and elementary schools received screenings

The Volunteer Impact:

“When my daughter was 3 years old and seemed to be seeing fine, a Prevent Blindness screening at her preschool found a possible vision problem. This saved my daughter from preventable vision loss and I decided to help by volunteering with Prevent Blindness Wisconsin. Preschool vision screening is easy and fun to do…and SO important!”

– Sara Holzman Lubar, North Shore volunteer since 2001

4 year old Addisyn Reed received a vision screening from Prevent Blindness Wisconsin volunteers in spring of 2017 at her preschool in Caledonia. After her screening, volunteers referred Addisyn for a complete eye exam, where she was ultimately diagnosed with strabismus and amblyopia (lazy eye). “It is not lost on us that a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin volunteer changed our daughter’s life. Your vision screening started a ball rolling that will improve Addisyn’s vision for the rest of her life. It is hard for us to find the right words to thank you for that. What [Prevent Blindness Wisconsin volunteers] do is amazing and we hope you know, much appreciated.”

– Michelle Reed, Addisyn’s mother
